LOSSES IN NIGERIA

Bank Building Fire & Collapse
20th March 2006
Broad Street, Lagos
Fire which lasted for over 10hours gutted a section of the 35year old, 20 storey NIDB House. Two fire outbreaks on the 7th and 8th floor were experienced in the recent past. Following a heavy rainstorm on 22nd March 2006, a top portion of the building collapsed, killing at least two persons and injuring about 20. 50% of the upper most eight floors collapsed and crashed onto the 12th floor slab level with the massive Braithwaite roof water storage tank crashing to the ground floor. The location and height of the building presented a major challenge for safe demolition requiring expertise from abroad. Features of this loss will also challenge the responsiveness of the insurance cover(s) to the various losses.

8th March 2006
Victoria Island, Lagos

At about 1.30am, fire of electrical origin, starting from the 11th floor of the 13-Storey Stallion House razed several offices occupied by a number of major companies. The generators were switched on after NEPA outage and a spark was noticed at the upper floor. An explosion rocked the generator room spreading fire through the cables to several of the upper floors. On March 15, 2006, a major oil marketer Co-Owner of the building published temporary relocation notice.
